Surf Glossary - N: From nose to nose dive

Nose

With Nose the nose is called the tip of the surfboard.
The most common one sees the round nose on Malibus and the very pointed shortboard nose.
Another "nose shape" is Evolution Nose, which combines the features of the first two, as it is not as sharp as a shortboard nose, but not as wide as a Malibu nose.

Basically, one can say that a round nose helps the board to have better gliding properties into the wave. A pointed nose, on the other hand, serves for better maneuverability.
In addition, the penetration techniques work better with a more pointed nose, as it provides the attacking wave with less surface to the water.

Noseguard

If the nose of a surfboard is very sharp (for example on shortboards), a so-called Noseguard is recommended.
Basically, this protection is nothing more than a rubber sleeve, which sticks to the top of his surfboard. Similar to softboards and rubber fins, Noseguards can avoid nasty injuries.
Noseguards are also helpful during transport, since the sensitive nose of your board is thus protected from damage due to knocks, impacts or splintering.

Nose Dive

The nose dive is not a maneuver but an "accident". It tips you after paddling with the nose into the trough and usually loses his surfboard.
The Nose Dive happens especially if you are too far in front of the board or paddle too late, namely when the wave has already caught you and throws you forward.

If you are doing a nose-dive, be careful when surfacing where your board is and protect your head and neck.
When Nose Dive tips the board can also jump back and tip you. Again, go away! Attention!
