Learn surfing as a beginner

In the beginner surf course we’ll tell you the basics of surfing. The aim of this course is that you can stand on your surfboard and ride a whitewater wave (a wave that’s already broken).

The most important maneuver in surfing is the “take off”. This technique enables you to ride a wave in a standing position.

Tine explains you how to do a “take off” in the correct way.
“Hello I’m Tine, I’m managing the office of the OTRO MODO Surfschool, and today I’ll explain you how to get on your surfboard.”

How to do a take off

First of all it’s important to find the correct position on the surfboard, not too far to the front, not too far to the back, in order that the board can start to glide.

When a suitable wave is coming. Don’t forget: paddle two times more, because your board needs the drive to become fast enough.

When it’s happening: Push up with both hands, which you locate at the height of your shoulders and use the drive to get your feet to the board in one line. Your stance should be hip width, and your front foot should be on the spot where your chest was located before. Twist your head and upper body in the direction you are travelling.

Don’t forget your whoop of joy: Yipieeeeeee!!!

Cheers after the first take off

Tine's Tips:

"By experience I know that not everybody can jump on the board right away, that’s why we explain to you about three different techniques to take off.
So you can easily pick the one you’re the most comfortable with and learn to stand on a board immediately.

Don’t forget: the correct position of your feet determines if you’ll stand on the board or fall off. That’s why it´s really important to pay more attention to your stance, instead of taking off too fast, in the beginning.

Enjoy the waves Tine"
