Advanced surf spots in the north or in the south?

Where better to surf in Fuerteventura - in the north or in the south. Today I want to answer this question especially for advanced surfers.

In one of the previous blog articles we have already answered the questions of whether the waves in the north and south of Fuerteventura are different.
Conclusion was: With an island that is 98km long, a swell that runs more than 1000km across the open ocean arrives no different in the north of the island than in the south.
It depends on the location, nature and orientation of the beaches and reefs, how the waves look at the end.

Many beaches and reefs in the north and south of Fuerteventura are similar and have similar orientations, some other beaches and reefs are oriented very differently.
Which of these differently oriented surf spots is more interesting and or better suited for advanced surfers?

Reefs for advanced surfers in the north and south

It is the reefs of the north coast of Fuerteventura that have earned the island the reputation of being the European Hawaii. The famous north coast of the Hawaiian island of Ohau with its many different surf spots is considered a role model here.

The many reefs on the north coast get a lot of swell thanks to their orientation, so there are almost always waves here. Unfortunately, these reefs are also very exposed to the wind and the north east trade wind typical of Fuerteventura is often onshore here. If the wind is offshore, it can get very crowded on the north coast.

The reefs in the south are oriented differently. You need a strong swell that wraps around the southern tip of the island. The trade wind is offshore here. Due to the longer approach over a gravel track, the surf spots in the south are significantly emptier than in the north of the island.

In addition, there are some waves in the south of the island that are oriented in such a way that they work with conditions similar to those of the Northshore and can have waves that can also be called really good in international comparison. There is a strong local scene here and you should behave accordingly.

The beaches in the south and north of Fuerteventura

There are also many beaches that have similar orientations and are located on the west coast or east coast. The conditions here are very similar. In the south there is a beach that gets ground waves when there are stronger waves from the west and works like an Australian point break. At the lighthouse in Jandia 150m long right waves can break that break over white sand. The wind is mostly offshore.

In the north at Flagbeach there is a beach that also has smaller waves with strong ground swells. Unfortunately the wind here is onshore and the part of the beach with no reef is very narrow.

Conclusion

It cannot be said in general whether the north or south of Fuerteventura is more suitable for advanced surfers. The north coast reefs absorb more swell but are quickly "blown away" by onshore wind. The reefs in the south are almost always offshore, but because of their orientation they need stronger swells. The waves in the north are quickly full, you have to drive a bit longer to the waves in the south.
