Good waves thanks to Calima in Fuerteventura

clean little waves in summer
hang loose

The hot desert wind Calima not only brings hot days and mild nights but also ensures good waves in Fuerteventura's west coast, especially in summer.

Hello surfer,

phew what the heat!
In major European cities, such temperatures can probably only be withstood in fully air-conditioned open-plan offices or cold stores of food wholesalers. Unfortunately, neither of these places gives you that kind of holiday feeling.

Here on Fuerteventura, the Canarian weather phenomenon Calima dominated the conversations of the locals and of course the choice of the ideal place to stay. Fortunately, as a surfer, you can always cool off in the sea or in the pool of our villa and don't have to flee to supermarkets or to work.

In short - with high summer temperatures Fuerteventura is certainly one of the best places to get cool thoughts.

The calima is wind from the Sahara

The cause of the hot temperatures is the so-called calima. The name Calima not only denotes the hot wind but is also often used as a general name for this weather phenomenon.

At Calima, the usual wind direction for the summer changes from northeast to east. The generally prevailing northeast wind, or trade wind, has the function of a natural air conditioning system for the Canary Islands, especially in summer. On its way across the Atlantic, this wind picks up the cool sea air and brings it to the Canary Islands.

The calima from the east comes from the Sahara. This wind brings the hot dry air of the Sahara from the African continent directly to the Canary Islands. The islands that are closest to Africa are of course even more affected by this weather phenomenon, such as Fuerteventura.

Again and again the wind transports dust and sand out of the Sahara, but mostly it is just warm and dry.
All surfers on Fuerteventura love these days on which a short moment after they come back from the water to the beach, salt crystals are on the skin in the places where the wind has blown the surfer dry.

Most surfers love the Calima because of the good waves

The trade winds from the northeast, which are usually dominant in summer, often ensure that small waves break cleanly on Fuerteventura's east coast.
However, it is also the reason why there is often an onshore wind on our surf school beach La Pared.

As safe as waves this beach is, unfortunately waves break here that cannot be found in the photo reports of surf reports about Fuerteventura. Small, clean green waves, which every advanced surfer longs for, are more likely to be found in Fuerteventura's summer on our second beach on the west coast of Playa de Garcey, where the wreck of the American Star could also be seen for a long time.

But on the Calima days, La Pared can also show its full potential in summer and remind surfers what kind of waves are part of everyday life on Fuerteventura from autumn.

Conclusion

The Sahara wind Calima not only ensures high summer temperatures but also pretty good surfing conditions in most of the waves.

Aloha :)
