Mountain biking and surfing in Morro Jable

small enduro descent over the port of Morro Jable
One of the many unspoilt surfing beaches in Fuerteventura's south

Around Morro Jable and Jandia there are not only very good and often empty surf spots and beaches. There are also very good trails for mountain bike enduro tours.

Hello surfer,
In the last article about mountain biking on Fuerteventura I already described the parallels between going downhill on a mountain bike and surfing a wave.
Today we surf again on a few deserted beaches in the south of Fuerteventura and of course on a few trails around Morro Jable and Jandia, little known for mountain bikers.

As has often been written, the south of Fuerteventura is not as well known to surfers as the north of the island. For us surfers who live here in the south of Fuerteventura this has a lot of advantages.
When I worked as a surf instructor here on Fuerteventura for the first time, I always wanted to go north, because the relevant opinion was that there were most surf spots there. Of course there are a lot of surf spots in the north - unfortunately that's not a secret and that's why the beaches and reefs around Corralejo are often quite crowded despite the many surf spots.

Only over the years did I realize how many surf spots and beaches there really are in the south of the island. The south of Fuerteventura is not the worse part for surfing, it is just the less known part.

You will understand that I cannot reveal any waves here, because then the magic would quickly fizzle out many surf spots here in the south of Fuerteventura.

In search of waves you discover trails for biking and vice versa

As a surfer, I discovered many waves for myself here south. It's not that I'm the first who ever surfed there, but it is that you go surfing on an unknown beach or reef and later talk to friends and acquaintances: “Have you actually been to beach XY before? ? "And then there are often interesting conversations a la" yes, I already know, this is the tide that is really going on "or" no, interesting, by the way, you should try surfing here ... "

The interesting thing for me as a mountain biker is that I started quite a few of these discovery tours to beaches that I didn't know before by bike. The way is then the goal and the other way around.
In short: I have already discovered one or two mountain bike trails while looking for waves.
As it is so often, you look for something in the household and find something else that you are not looking for but have been missing for a long time.

A mountain bike enduro tour to Cofete

But of course I would like to give you a tour tip in this article that you can find quickly if you only visit Fuerteventura for a short time.
An enduro tour through the Gran Valle to Cofete and back. As far as altitude is concerned, this tour can take on challenging tours in low mountain ranges and possibly also in the Alps.

The tour starts at the end of Morro Jable above the harbor. From here you drive about 500m on the gravel road until a large valley opens to the right. At the end of this valley is a pass that leads to Cofete, the most remote and beautiful beach on the island. A goat path meanders up to the pass and winds down the mountain in steep serpentines on the other side.

On both sides there are technical passages where there is absolutely no shame in getting off and pushing a bit. The descent through the Gran Valle back to Morro Jable is definitely the highlight of the tour.

Surfers will see the potential of Cofete and think of French beach breaks. I sometimes take a handplane with me to surf a bit in the shore break, but more on that in another article.

Conclusion

In the area of Morro Jable and Jandia there are not only many little-known surf spots and beaches but also some mountain bike enduro tours. My favorite tour is the old goat path through the Gran Valle over the pass to Cofete.
