Strong winds in Fuerteventura

Strong winds often create clean little waves on the east coast, ideal for softboards and malibus
Morro Jable beach is also protected from strong winds

Winds in Fuerteventura can be strong sometimes. Can you still lie on the beach? Is it still possible to surf the waves despite this wind?

Hello surfer,

If you translate the name of our favorite island Fuerteventura from Spanish into English, then the English name of Fuerteventura is “strong wind”.

Of course, such names always have an origin and it is no secret that the wind in Fuerteventura can already take on strengths that would be called a storm in Central Europe.

You can say that what might be persistent rain elsewhere that makes the holiday difficult, here on Fuerteventura it is the strong wind on some days. Rain - I had already written that in several previous articles - is so rare in Fuerteventura that when you visit Fuerteventura you can already speak of a "sun guarantee".

But if strong winds are predicted before a trip to Fuerteventura, some questions arise:

Can you even go surfing in the strong winds in Fuerteventura?

Short answer in advance:
Yes of course :)

The interesting thing for surfers in Fuerteventura is the fact that between beaches, which are on very different coasts, are only a few minutes by car. Strong winds that tend to negatively affect the waves on one side of the island can come from a different angle on another coast and even be particularly good for certain waves here.

Would you like a little example?
The southeast coast of Fuerteventura - here are also two of the beaches that we regularly visit with our surf courses. The special thing here is that the waves are not caused by low pressure areas far out on the Atlantic, but by strong local winds, as they can occur in Fuerteventura.
The highlight?
The strong wind generates moderate waves here, which are waist-high to chest-high, but at the same time, thanks to a geographical peculiarity, it is directed offshore onto the sea.
This means that the waves are very clean and orderly. Ideal for surfing green / unbroken waves. In addition, it is nowhere near as difficult to paddle into the line up behind the broken waves.
Especially in summer, our surf students love the waves on the east coast of Fuerteventura.

Can you still lie on the beach, sunbathe and bathe normally in the strong winds?

Here, too, I can answer "Yes" with a clear conscience :)
Of course, you can't lie on every beach, but there are places that are sheltered from the wind at many beaches where we surf.
For example, in the bay of Bahia La Pared in La Pared, there is a place that is shielded from the wind thanks to the large cliff that runs into the sea and where you can wonderfully lie in the sun and bathe.
In addition, the lower part of the property of our villa is cut in such a way that you hardly notice the strong winds by the swimming pool, on the sun lounger, in the garden and on the terrace with a fireplace.

The small bay of Morro Jable and the associated beach with its beach promenade, shops and restaurants are so conveniently located that you hardly notice the strong storms here and on days when you can't even put your towel in the sand elsewhere, in Morro Jable you can relax, sunbathe and bathe.

Conclusion

If the days with strong winds in Fuerteventura are for some the equivalent of bad rainy weather, in contrast to rainy days in Central Europe, there are relatively few restrictions on stormy days in Fuerteventura, because there are many sheltered bays and beaches. The waves of the east coast, which are just loved by slightly advanced surfers, only arise on these windy days.
Strong winds in Fuerteventura do not spoil holiday and surfing fun here!
