Which water temperature should surfers expect when they travel to Fuerteventura? The question sounds simple, but is quite important. For us surfers, cold water does not mean we stay at the beach. For surfers, water temperatures are more important in order to pack the right things for the holidays. Do you need a wetsuit in Fuerteventura? If so, and especially at what time of the year.
Water temperature in Fuerteventura in summer and autumn
In summer and autumn the water in Fuerteventura is between 22 and 25 degrees warm. Do you need a wetsuit to surf during this time? Yes and no. During the day, the water is often as warm enough for a boardshort. As protection for the sun you should wear a lycra. If it is very windy and / or you want to stay longer in the water, we recommend a short wetsuit. So a suit with short legs and arms.
Cold sensitive people take a suit with long legs and short arms. The thickness of the wetsuit should be 2 to 3 millimeters. No fun: it can be uncomfortable to sweat in a thick wetsuit.
Water temperatures in winter and spring in Fuerteventura
In winter and spring, the water in Fuerteventura is between 18 and 22 degrees warm. There are days with little wind and plenty of sun, where you can surf in January or February only in swimming trunks. For the rest of the day we recommend a 2 to 3 mm thick wetsuit with long arms and long legs. This thickness is sufficient to not freeze in the water in the Canary Islands. In addition, the wetsuit is a good protection against sunburn.
My conclusion
The water in Fuerteventura is relatively warm throughout the year. The water temperature for surfing is such that a long suit with a thickness of 2 to 3 millimeters is quite sufficient to surf all year round in Fuerteventura. In summer and autumn, a shorty or just lycra and boardshorts is enough.
